Darien

Darién is by far the most remote and unknown territory of the Republic, protected by dense pristine forests and jungle in the truest sense of the word. It is a paradise for naturalists, botanists, explorers, archaeologists, anthropologists and ethnologists. The political division puts the official boundaries of the province near Punta Brava in the Pacific Gulf, of San Miguel and the village of Agua Fria on the Panamerican Highway and down to the border with Colombia, but many people regard the Bayano river watershed in the province of Panama as the beginning of Darién. We will, therefore, include not only Darién province but also part of the province of Panama and San Blas archipelago.

Trying to discover Darién needs preparation, whether you want to go by land and drive up to Yaviza where a small boat will take you to explore rivers and tributaries or whether you prefer to fly to either Yaviza, La Palma (capital of the province), El Real, Jaque or Garachine. After that the principal means of communication is definitely the river. But before getting into expedition planning let us have a close look at this fascinating region.
